15-year-old Grace, a black girl in Michigan, was arrested during a worldwide pandemic for not doing her online schoolwork on probation. Grace has ADHD and was struggling with her behavior and past situations at home and at school. For the entire story, please click here.
While criminals were being let out of jail for the coronavirus, Judge Mary Ellen Brennan decided to send a child into a detention center. Although the Judge denied Grace’s release and the next hearing is set for September 2020, we are continuing our fight to demand justice for her.
We have to make sure Grace gets released and receives adequate help. Learn how you can help below.
Update July 31,2020: The court appeal has allowed Grace to be released!!! Grace's mom Charisse has enjoyed her daughter being home, and will determine her and Grace's interest in speaking publicly next week. In the interim, they're both extremely and deeply appreciative of the outpouring of support and for Grace's release. We at Girls for Grace would also to thank each and every who helped in a big or small way, it truly means a lot.
Update August 11,2020: Grace has finally been let off of probation and the Court has officially terminated the case! Her mother, Charisse, says,"To say we are pleased with the outcome is understatement." Grace's new caseworker has also stated she is doing very well and is taking part in therapy. We are thrilled to at this news and wish Grace the best moving forward.
